This section provides step-by-step instruction for installing the Axxon PSIM software with the Sever/Remore Administrator's workstation installation type.

Note

Note the following features during the installation of the Axxon PSIM software:

  • Install the Axxon PSIM software on a clean Windows OS (see the Operating system requirements section).
  • To install the Axxon PSIM software, OS Windows administrator rights are required.

To install the Axxon PSIM software, do the following:

  1. Unpack the archive downloaded from the official website of the company, in accordance with the manual in the
Getting ready for Axxon PSIM installation section. The destination folder displays the contents of the kit.
  2. Run the setup.exe executable file designed to start the Axxon PSIM installation program. As a result, the dialog window for selecting the language of the installation program is displayed.

    Note

When you install Axxon PSIM on the OS Windows 8 and the OS Windows Server 2012, you must install Microsoft.Net Framework 8.0 or later. Otherwise, it is installed along with Axxon PSIM

  3. Select the language of the installation program from the list and click the Install button.

As a result, the dialog window for selecting the type of installation is displayed.
  4. Select the Server/Remote Administrator's workstation installation type.
  5. Set the Enable full installation log (increases product installation time) checkbox if you want to write all software installation events to the log file.

    Note

When you install the software, the event logging is performed in the PSIMSetup.log log file. To collect log files, we recommend using the Support.exe utility (see The utility for collecting configuration data on servers and RWS for the Technical Support section).
  6. Click the Next button.
The dialog window for selecting the components for installation is displayed.
  7. Set the checkboxes next to the components that you want to install (you can expand the lists by clicking ). Consider the following peculiarities when you select the components:
    1. We recommend installing all provided components—the Axxon PSIM installer sets checkboxes next to everything required for proper operation by default.
    2. If you perform the installation using the comprehensive installation package, including the vertical solutions modules, at this stage you can select the installed vertical solutions. You must select only those that you will actually use on this computer; there is no need to install everything. Vertical solutions are installed after you complete the Axxon PSIM Base installation. The installation process is described in the documentation for the corresponding vertical sollution (see the links at the bottom of the Documentation for Axxon PSIM page).

    3. To operate in Axxon PSIM, you must install Microsoft.Net Framework 4.0 or later. Usually it is bundled with Windows OS and doesn't require separate installation. If you don't have it, then .Net 4.6 is offered for installation at prerequisites—make sure to set the checkbox. For more information about Microsoft.Net Framework, see the official documentation at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/.
    4. At this stage, you can refuse to install the MS SQL Express database server. In this case, at step 16, you must configure the connection to the remote database. After you complete the installation of Axxon PSIM, you can change the database connection parameters using the idb.exe utility, see Connecting the Axxon PSIM database. Note that Axxon PSIM operation is impossible without connection to any database source.

      Note

If this method of language installation isn't suitable, later you can install each language separately (see Installing the language). After the installation, use the tweaki.exe utility to switch languages (see Switching languages in the Axxon PSIM Software System).

  8. Click the Install button.
After that, the automatic installation of the selected components is performed except Microsoft SQL Server Express 2019 database server (required for operation with Axxon PSIM databases), that is installed manually (see Microsoft documentation).

    Note

To ensure stable and proper operation of Axxon PSIM on the Windows 11 OS, we recommend using the Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Express database server or the newer version.

    Attention!

The installation of the required prerequisites can take a lot of time (more than 10 minutes).

After you complete it, the Axxon PSIM welcome dialog window for the installation is displayed.

  9. Click the Next button.
The dialog window with the license agreement is displayed.
  10. Read the license agreement and accept its terms by setting the switch into the I accept the terms of the License agreement position, otherwise the Axxon PSIM installation is stopped.
  11. Click the Next button.
The dialog window for selecting the installation mode is displayed.
  12. Select the installation mode.
  13. Click the Next button.

When you select the Custom installation mode, the dialog window for selecting the installation path is displayed, and then the dialog window for selecting the Axxon PSIM components is displayed. When you select the Standard installation mode, these steps are omitted.

    Note

When you select a component, the description of the component is displayed in the installation window.

The dialog window for specifying the path to the file with the license key is displayed.

    Note

Leave the field blank if the key file is copied later.
  14. Click the Next button.
The dialog window for selecting the Axxon PSIM as a service installation type is displayed.

    Note

When you install as a service, the 64-bit version of Axxon PSIM isn't available. If you set this checkbox, then 32-bit modules are started after you install Axxon PSIM as a service.

  15. Set the Install Axxon PSIM as a service checkbox if you want to start the Axxon PSIM software before the user authorization in the Windows OS and before the startup of Windows applications (including the Explorer application that is used for starting Windows OS interfaces and various other applications installed on the server, see Working with Windows OS services for operating Axxon PSIM™ installed as a Service section).
  16. Click the Next button.
The dialog window for selecting the MS SQL Server database server is displayed. Specify the authentication parameters during the connection.

    Attention!

If the computer administrator performs the installation of Axxon PSIM, and Windows credentials are used for the SQL server authentication, the access to the database of any other user is impossible without the additional settings of the idb.exe utility and knowledge of the administrator login and password. That is why we highly don't recommend using such an authentication method of the SQL server.

  17. Select the SQL-server using the Database Server drop-down list.

    Note

If you want to use the SQL-server installed on this (local) computer, select the (local)\SQLEXPRESS item (set by default).

    Attention!

You cannot connect different servers to one database.

The server can use the remote database, but it results in high requirements for the network and other resources and can cause delays when you transmit events and states between cores that negatively affect the system performance.

  18. Set the authorization parameters that are used by Axxon PSIM during the connection to the SQL-server.

    Note

If you install Axxon PSIM as a service, select the SQL server authentication check, that is, set the switch to the Use the following username and password position and specify the login and password to authorize in the server database in the corresponding fields. If you want to connect to the database using Windows credentials, then for proper operation of Axxon PSIM under any other user, the user must have the corresponding SQL server rights.

Ways of authorization performed in the dialog window.

    Ways of authorization
