General information

Network bandwidth is one of the key factors limiting the performance of a distributed video surveillance system. Insufficient bandwidth can lead to loss of video data, transmission delays, and software malfunction.

The majority of network traffic consists of video streams from IP cameras and IP servers. In remote locations (for example, ATMs and remote offices), the entire video stream is transmitted over communication channels, which places increased demands on their bandwidth.

Minimum requirements

For correct operation of Axxon One, the minimum data transmission rate over the communication channel must be at least 2 Mbps.

Attention!

The indicated value is a minimum and doesn't take into account the total load from all connected devices and client workstations. To calculate the actual required bandwidth, see Calculation of required bandwidth.

Calculation of required bandwidth

To determine the required TCP/IP network bandwidth for transmitting video signals from IP devices, we recommend using Platform Calculator. When you use it, consider the value:

  • Total streams Summary stream from IP cameras (Mbit/s)—the total network load created by video streams from all connected IP cameras and other sources.

Note

In addition to video streams, the network transfers service traffic (control commands, synchronization, data from detectors, and so on). We recommend allocating a bandwidth reserve of at least 10–15% of the calculated total video stream.

Recommendations for network organization

  • For network segments with high loads, we recommend using switches with Quality of Service (QoS) to prioritize video traffic.
  • When organizing communication channels between remote sites, you must consider not only the nominal but also the actual (guaranteed) channel bandwidth.
  • For wireless connections, you must account for possible packet loss and speed fluctuations and allow for additional reserve.
